With the Government setting out plans for a net-zero future, and announcements such as from 2025 gas and oil boilers will be banned in all new-build homes and no gas boilers are to be sold after 2035, Air Source Heat Pumps are the future of heating your home.

Domestic Air Source Heat Pump installations are currently incentivised by the government through the Renewable Heating Incentive (RHI) until 31st March 2022. From this date the scheme will be replaced with the boiler upgrade scheme.

HOW IT WORKS

Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) are a system that can transfer heat from the outside of your property to inside. Using the latest technology principles of vapor compression refrigeration, it uses a refrigerant system involving a compressor and condenser to absorb heat and transfers it to your home. In simple terms they do the opposite of an air conditioning unit or fridge, rather than cooling it warms, the heat can then be distributed around your home by using your radiators or underfloor heating. Unlike gas and oil boilers, ASHP’s are typically designed to run 24/7 using low continuous amounts of heat and energy, rather than large amounts of energy and bursts of heat.

How do I apply for the Renewable Heating Incentive (RHI)

How much will it cost?

All of this depends on what size heat pump you need and how much work / alterations are needed, every property is different. Please get in touch for a free no obligation quote.

Will I have to change all my radiators and why?

For all installations we will carry out a full room by room heat loss report, this will determine if and which radiators may need upgrading. The reason for this is Air Source Heat pumps run of a lower flow temperature than your current boiler, so you will typically need a larger heat source to give the same heat outputs.

How much do they cost to run?

There are many many factors to take into consideration IE size of your house, the insulation values, however the efficiency of a Heat Pump is calculated in CoP (Coefficient of Performance). CoP measures the amount of input compared to the amount of output. For example, if a heat pump uses one 1kW of electricity and 4 kW of heat is produced, the CoP is 4. (400% efficient) The higher the CoP, the more efficient the heat pump is and the lower your bills will be, a heat pumps average COP is over 3. Even the best gas boiler on the market would be less than 100 % efficient.

Where do I put the heat pump?

The heat pump has to be sited outside, typically on a rear external wall with a minimum of 1 metre clearance from the front of the fan. Locations can all be discussed with your engineer as to where is best and most practical.
